Four Dubai residents win Urban Pixels 2017 with creative photos from across Meraas’ destinations

Participants in the second edition of Meraas’ annual photo competition reflect the vibrant lifestyle at City Walk, The Beach, Boxpark, The Outlet Village, Last Exit, and Kite Beach

Meraas has announced the winning entries from the second edition of its annual photo competition Urban Pixels, with Subodh Shetty, Febina Nabeel, Joey S. Reginaldo, Mohammed Abdelrahman Abdelhakim, and collecting prizes worth a combined AED20,000 for entries submitted to the competition’s four categories – ‘Active’, ‘Urban’, ‘Life’, and ‘The People’s Choice Award’.

More than 5,000 images were received during the competition, and the winners were revealed on Meraas’ social media platforms on Wednesday. In addition to some exciting prizes, winners will have their entries displayed on digital screens at City Walk, The Beach, and Boxpark, alongside the most creative photos from the competition’s finalists.

Winners were selected by a panel of judges from photos created by all ages and levels of ability, and captured the lifestyle and creative urban culture emerging at Meraas’ destinations. The panel of judges included internationally-renowned artist Slinkachu, who participated in the Dubai Walls initiative at City Walk, and who has created street art installations in cities around the world.

Images were reviewed against a number of criteria with the aim of identifying original and inspiring stories being played out on the streets of City Walk; the lifestyle at The Beach, the offbeat urban scene at Boxpark, and chic retail experience at The Outlet Village. Photos that represented the themed food truck concepts at Last Exit and the thrill of a day at Dubai’s favourite community beach, Kite Beach, were also encouraged through Urban Pixels 2017.

Winning entries were also judged based on the competition’s three categories: ‘Active’ images of people exercising, enjoying sporting activities, and/or playing; ‘Urban’ places, architecture, and structures, shadows and tricks of the light; in addition to shots that capture ‘Life’ experiences such as a family gathering, celebration, food and drink, and other special occasions.

The photo taken by Mohamed Abdelrahman Abdelhakim, winner of The People’s Choice Award, was chosen from six finalists based on the number of likes received on Instagram.

The competition was held between 22 March and 12 April 2017, and has been created to promote engagement and creativity among residents and visitors to Dubai.
