Meraas announces support for the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children

#DonateASeat campaign to raise funds and awareness during the Holy Month of Ramadan and Eid

Meraas has launched #DonateASeat, an initiative to raise funds in support of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWAC), the first licensed non-profit shelter in the UAE and the only one that runs specifically for the care of women and children. The initiative also aims to encourage people in Dubai to reach out to those around them who will spend the Holy Month of Ramadan and Eid alone.

The campaign will run from the end of May to 27 June. All donations will go directly to DWFAC, and will support the foundation’s work in the community, whether it is ensuring a child can continue their studies; helping a woman find a secure shelter, or vulnerable members of society find a place that they can call home.

DWFAC focuses on providing immediate protection and support services to victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking. The foundation’s partners include the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; International Organisation for Migration, the migration agency of the United Nations and Emirates Red Crescent, as well as other local organisations that share its vision of creating positive change in the lives of women and children in the UAE.

Afra Al Basti, Director General of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, said: “We are pleased to see this level of keenness from Meraas to support the social efforts in general and the foundation’s effort to help the victims of abuse of women and children, which makes Meraas a role model among UAE companies that actively contribute in serving the Emirati society”.

She added that this is not the first time the two organisations have collaborated, with several successful initiatives and campaigns having already had a positive impact on awareness towards violence against women and children, and encouraging members of society to report it.

“The Dubai Foundation for Women and Children hopes this collaboration will develop to the stage of partnership to contribute to the elimination of all forms of violence against women and children and contribute to maintaining the stability and development of the UAE society”, Al Basti added.

As part of the #DonateASeat campaign, a short film and dedicated website (www.donateaseat.ae) have been created to drive awareness and inform people about how they can contribute. Symbolic ‘Iftar for One’ installations with one table, one seat and one plate will be set up at City Walk, The Beach, Boxpark, and The Outlet Village to bring the concept to life. The aim is also to reinforce a message that communities have the power to end the loneliness these women and children feel.
